Laser pointer for beginners: choosing your first laser

Green, red or violet? Pen or rechargeable? What does class 2 mean? A friendly beginner's guide to choosing your first laser pointer in the UK.

Laser pointer for beginners: choosing your first laser

Buying your first laser pointer should be simple – and yet search online and you will be swamped with impossible milliwatt numbers, "burning" beams and dozens of nearly identical gadgets. This beginner's guide cuts through it. In ten minutes you will know which colour, which type and which model suits you best.

Step 1: what will you use it for?

Start with the job, not the gadget. Most of our customers buy a laser pointer for one of these:

  • Playing with a cat – you need a clear dot and a comfortable grip, not range.
  • Presentations and teaching – you need a clear dot on a screen and reliability.
  • A gift – you want something ready to use, ideally with a little "wow".
  • Walks, the garden, stars – you need the most visible dot at a distance.

Keep your main use in mind as you read on.

Step 2: understand laser classes (the short version)

Lasers are grouped into classes under the standard EN 60825-1. For a home user, one class matters: class 2, with an output up to 1 mW. That is the class intended for sale to the public in the UK. With a class 2 laser, the eye's natural blink reflex gives protection against a brief accidental glance – though you should still never point it at anyone's eyes.

Higher classes are more powerful and can cause eye injuries very quickly. They are not intended for the general public, and they offer nothing a household actually needs. So when you see a listing promising thousands of milliwatts, treat it as a warning sign, not a feature. Every laser we sell is class 2, and every unit is measured before it is shipped.

Step 3: choose a colour

ColourLookBest forIndicative range in the dark
Green (532 nm)Brightest-looking dotAll-round, outdoors, big rooms, catsapprox. 1 km
RedClassic, calm dotPresentations, cat play indoorsapprox. 300–500 m
Violet (405 nm)Purple-blue, unusualGifts, indoors, something differentapprox. 200 m
Indicative: depends on light, weather and surface.

If you can only have one laser and you are not sure, choose green. It looks brightest to the human eye and reaches furthest. If your main use is presentations, red is the comfortable classic. Violet is the fun extra.

Step 4: pen or rechargeable Pro?

Pen lasers (AAA batteries)

Our pen lasers – X1 green, X2 green with pattern cap, M1 red and Z1 violet – are slim, simple and run on two AAA batteries, which are included. Nothing to charge, nothing to learn. They are perfect for occasional use, as a first laser or as a gift.

Rechargeable Pro lasers

The Pro series has an aluminium body and a rechargeable Li-ion battery with charger included. The full-size models (G3 Pro, G1 Pro, R1 Pro, V1 Pro) use an 18650 battery and come with two safety keys. The compact models (G2 Pro, R2 Pro, V2 Pro) use a smaller 16340 battery and have no safety keys. Choose Pro if you use your laser often, or want safety keys in a family home.

Note: Pro does not mean more powerful. Every laser we sell is up to 1 mW. The difference is build, battery and features.

Step 5: our picks for beginners

Step 6: a few safety basics

Whatever you buy, the rules are the same: never aim at eyes, people or animals' eyes; never at vehicles or aircraft (in the UK that is a criminal offence); never at mirrors, windows or other reflective surfaces. Keep lasers away from children – a laser pointer is not a toy, and we sell to adults (18+) only. Our laser pointer safety page explains it all.

Common beginner questions

Is a more expensive laser brighter?

Not with us. Every laser we sell is up to 1 mW. Brightness differences come from the colour (green looks brightest), not from the price. You pay more for a rechargeable battery, an aluminium body, safety keys or a pattern lens.

Can I see the beam like in films?

Not usually. With a class 2 laser you see the dot where it lands. The green beam can be faintly visible in very dark, humid air, but do not expect a light sabre.

How long do the batteries last?

That depends on how you use it. Pen lasers run on ordinary AAA batteries you can replace anywhere; Pro lasers recharge. Read which battery your laser pointer needs for tips.

Can I use one with my cat straight away?

Yes – just keep the dot on the floor, never in the eyes, keep it short and end with a real toy.

Step 7: buying from us

Delivery is free and tracked: we ship with PostNL and UK delivery usually takes 2–5 working days. Every order fits through the letterbox. You have 14 days to change your mind and a 1-year warranty on top of your statutory rights. Still in doubt? Try the laser finder or put models side by side on the compare page.
